For English-language readers, this book has taken the long way home. We need far more -- and far more varied -- depictions of autism. One day, while sitting in a library, Jhumpa conceived her first short story in Italian. She considers, if only in passing, the work of writers who have composed successfully in a second language Nabokov, Beckett, Conrad. The Stuff of Thought: Language as a Window into Human Nature reverse-engineers our relationship with language, exploring what the words we use reveal about the way we think. Reading in Italian arouses a similar feeling in me.
A short work of nonfiction, I rate In Other Words book Other Words 4 stars, only because I wished it could have been longer so I could have spent all the more time with Jhumpa Lahiri's prose. As someone who has learned new languages as both a child and an adult, I know first hand how difficult it can be to learn a new language system while already set in one's ways. In Other Words is the result of Square Peg Stories, a creative writing scheme aimed specifically at autistic writers that took place in London between November and May Every time I read Pride and Prejudice, I want to dig her up and hit her over the skull with her own shin-bone. And what better way to celebrate them than through the written word itself?
In Other Words written entirely in Italian while living in Italy is Lahiri's first work of nonfiction. With In Other Words book aid of a dictionary, notebook, and a network of peers, she transitioned to reading and writing exclusively in Italian. She considers, if only in passing, the work of writers who have composed successfully in a second language Nabokov, Beckett, Conrad. Lahiri, writing in Italian, at this point seems only a lesser version of herself, a full orchestra reduced to tentative woodwinds. Regardless of the language of her forthcoming books, Lahiri is a gifted writer, one of the outstanding novelists of this generation.

In Other Words book participants were selected to take part in a series of workshops and mentoring sessions run by published authors, with the aim of each writer producing a short story. There are so many myths surrounding autism and autistic people and they have persisted for generations. The first readers of this book were Italian speakers, allowing a new group of people to read Lahiri's outstanding prose.
Bourdieu seems perfectly able to reason coherently about any number of subjects here he takes up sport, art, fieldwork, literature, philosophy, and opinion polls, among others.
Reading Lahiri in English, the overriding sensation is one of restraint. Witty and illuminating, the book covers 10 different types of languages spanning across various eras and locales, In Other Words book ancient and classical to indigenous to African to Scandinavian, digging to find the precious meanings lost in translation.
The location had previously been home to the Albina Art Center, an organization aimed at "discovering and developing the intellectual and cultural resources of the area,"  and had historically been a black neighborhood. What these stories share is that they are written by people whom mainstream society often dismisses as unimaginative, or not capable of creativity.

The book is divided into different themes, from food to love to just about everything in between, that reveal specific cultural dispositions towards these subjects through the language in which they are framed.

The final chapter on ethics and morality is a nice addition to this new edition of the book but it read a bit like a wikipedia article, very factual and clinical, quite exhaustively defining ethics and morality.
From this point Jhumpa begins discussing with her reader her insecurities with language in more depth. In Other Words is a collection of her diary entries about her relationship with the Italian language and written in Italian.
This book may well be just the right introduction to an elegant and important thinker—possibly In Other Words book most inventive thinker in sociology today. When you read these stories, those In Other Words book dissolve.
Although I squirmed at the translator who refused to translate a glossary of slaughterhouse terminology simply because she was a vegetarian; that's not an ethical dilemma, it's over-sensitivity and borderline hysteria how typical of a woman :-P A definite improvement on the last edition, especially aesthetically and with the added bonus of the extra chapter on ethics.
